All About Me

Summer 2012
Hello and Welcome to my Site! My name is Katie Spence and I teach 5th Grade Sciencein the Streetsboro School District. I have taught in all sorts of settings but I am happy to have settled here at Defer. This is my 4th year at Defer but in the past have taught 5th, 6th, and 7th grade science. One year I even held a special position teaching K, 1, 2 science as an exploratory program. I got my undergraduate degree from Mount Union University in Middle Childhood Education. I have always loved Math and Science and have minors in both. I graduated in August 2012 with my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction (emphasis in Science Education) from Kent State. I attend conferences about science, technology, or teaching frequently and enjoy learning and trying new things.
Personally, I have a large family (I am the oldest of 5 kids in my family). My husband, Ryan, is a high school math teacher. We have a two-year old son Carter and a new baby Casey, who keep us very busy at home. My summer was spent playing ball and reading books to Carter while balancing Casey's newborn sleepless nights and feedings. We took a trip to PA to visit family and have hit the zoo and waterpark frequently. Before children Ryan and I enjoyed traveling across the country together. Our goal is to visit all fifty states...although we haven't been anywhere new the past 3 years. We have most of the states east of the Mississippi River done, but need to someday head out west!! Most of our vacations revolve around watching some baseball, football, or visiting family. We were fortunate to also travel to Germany and Austria a few years ago. It truly was the trip of a lifetime for us and I hope we get to go back some day.
I love being outside, gardening in the summer, and running/walking/biking in the park or around our neighborhood. Ryan and I do many projects around the house too. I take pride in cooking and baking delicious meals for my friends and family. I am a huge Cleveland sports fan (Indians and Browns), although I am disappointed with the end of most seasons. Fall is my favorite time of year because of the beautiful scenery, great weather, BBQ's, clambakes and sports (baseball and football) seasons colliding.
